Just One Man's Perceptions

My post about Quixtar has been linked from this blog. And no, this is not my way of basking in the light of my newfound Internet fame :) I'll start basking only when people call me the Anti-Quixtar messiah :P

Actually, this person's blog attempts to be a neutral party in providing information about Quixtar and joining. I haven't read enough of the blog to say whether he's truly neutral or not. The few posts I've read seem to put him in the neutral camp. That would be the first person I've met who's neutral on the company.

Anyways, I mentioned in a comment to him that I probably come off as a Quixtar hater. I actually don't know enough about the company to care too much either way. Obviously though, I wouldn't recommend anyone to join up with Quixtar. What I am a hater of is the damned IBOs (Individual Business Owners) who keep coming up to me or who think about coming up to me in stores and see if I'm interested in a personal business.

Come to think of it, I was in Great Mall over the weekend taking a break on a bench. Behind me were 3 desi's sitting down on the adjacent bench. Two of them were talking to the third starting off with small talk. It quickly led to the personal business thing. My wife and I looked at each other, joked in Gujarati about warning the 3rd guy about what he's being pulled into. Actually, I wouldn't stop someone from joining; they can figure it out on their own. If they want to join, that's their business.

So there it is. The solictors need to be smoother with this thing because it's way too easy to predict who they are and why they're talking to you in the first place. And from what I've read today about Quixtar, you can buy a lot of training/personal improvement materials to help your business. Either those materials suck, or Quixtar's gotta hire Tony Robbins to put together a 12-step improvement process.

Ok, that's seriously enough. The company doesn't need any more of my comments. Thanks Eric Janssen for the link, you've sent a lot of hits my way and now I'm seriously on my way to internet fame :) Now I just need to make a billion dollars off this thing.

Your empathy towards the Company and hatred of the IBOs (who keep pestering you) will change drastically when you find what is happening in India. It takes Rs. 4400/- to become an IBO (Here it is Amway, not Quixtar) in India. Not a small sum. More than what a graduate clerk earns in a month. 4 lakh active (meaning seriously working) IBOs, (according to AMWAY Managing Director) chasing the Dream and trying to recruit more IBOs all hoping to earn millions by self consuming 40 odd detergent shampoos and personal care products priced way beyond anyone's reach. All spending roughly Rs. 1000 per month in motivational tapes and seminars and functions, all teaching how these tapes and seminars are essential for success :) Most will drop out in frustration within a year, after having wasted a few thousand rupees, precious time and having damaged family ties, relations and friedships. They will be replaced by new suckers. In last 7 years of working more than a couple of million (at least ?) Indians have been recruited. Multiply by 4400/-. Multiply again by a weekly audio cassette @ Rs. 100/- each, Multiply again by weekly open meeting at Rs. 20/- (30/- for Metro), 150/-for Business seminar every alternate month, 1 big function every quarter @ 500/-. And we haven't even come to the products.

Are you with me ? Now about the products. There are only 40 odd products, not thousands. Hygeine-Personal Care , Homecare and Vitamins. Glister (Amway) toothpaste 100 grams is Rs. 109/- while Colgate 150 grams is Rs. 35/-. Satinique (Amway) Dandruff control Shampoo 250 ml is Rs. 329/- while Clinic Plus 200ml is Rs. 70/-. Dish Drop Utensil cleaner 500 ml is Rs. 269/- while Multi purpose cleaning powder is Rs. 20/- a kg. Granted the quality is good but then again comparative products (Colgate, Clinic etc.) are not inferior either. And Amway Nutrilite Herbal Vitamins are 2700/- for 120 Tablets.

Now one is not likely to find ready customers at this kind of pricing (nor retailing is insisted) so these IBOs are brainwashed into self consuming, thus creating a captive market for the products. And the Company MD boasts that Amway India did not have to resort to price cuts and discounts like other FMCGs.

You get the idea ? You buy Rs. 4000/- worth and get Rs. 120/- in commission @ 3%. You buy or your sponsored IBOs buy 20000/- and commission is 6 %, 9% on 40000/- and so on.

So now sympathize with those IBOs. If they beocme wiser and EX IBOs after losing say 10 to 20 thousand Rupees, they are lucky. And Amway is planning on a rural thrust into 500 more towns this year. If your home town in Gujarat is covered now the youth in your Native Place is targetted. Spare a thought for them. Shed a tear or two.

And here is the bright side. The beneficiaries of this scam, this pyramid scheme which feeds on the ignorant avarice of the dream chasers of the lower middle class in your country are the dream builder NRIs well settled in USA. Kanti Gala, Kulin Desai, Raj Shah, Manoj Dodani, Harsh Thakkar, Dhimat Desai, Sangeeta Jani etc. Yes, Jigar Bhai, from your Home State Gujarat. Ain't it Great !
